I don't know why more people don't want to do that. I want to know why so much of games media criticism is framed through a tribalistic lens instead of fans being curious enough to dig deep and analyze why they like a thing and - more importantly - does the reasons they think they like a thing actually hold up to reality. LIke, I think we can safely say that the dude's read of the game leaving it ambiguous whether the doctor died has been thoroughly debunked, right? But do you think he's gonna go 'Oh, I guess I interpreted that wrong, I should re-evaluate my understanding of the game'? No, he's gonna be salty that a bunch of TLoU2 loser fans showed his ass up. It's also a refusal to even entertain the possibility that they're wrong. I can't tell you what the cause of it is (though I will agree a factor is people projecting themselves onto the character regardless of whether the projection fits his character or not). We can call it what it is - Poor Media Literacy. I have legendarily awful social skills and I feel I get a good read on Joel just fine. I feel like the worst of it can be cleanly boiled down to self insert fanfiction for people with poorly developed social skills.Р”В¬lick to shrink.I'm not saying that's out of line, but it is a bit presumptuous. It's not a toggle that just suddenly flips. The idea that Joel is this hardened killer that's only out for himself, until he isn't, is one of the most cynical readings of his character imaginable. His actions between both games come into pinpoint clarity and it becomes obvious that Joel would not have wanted Ellie to go to Seattle. Look at it in terms of him wanting to keep Ellie as far away as possible from a hunter-esque lifestyle. He decides to put responsibility for Ellie onto Tommy because something happening to Ellie along the rest of their journey very well might kill him inside. Joel even tries to keep Ellie out of active combat situations for as long as he can, until it becomes a straight up tactical disadvantage to leave her out. Naughty Dog, however, has not talked at all about Joel's involvement in the sequel, though the character is mentioned in the E3 2018 trailer.
